CLOSING THE LOOP SUSTAINABLY

QuinTerra is a Malaysian based biotechnology company dedicated to transforming food waste into nutritious food for humans via our innovative regenerative farming model, addressing food waste and security in Malaysia while promoting environmental sustainability.

ABOUT US

QuinTerra is dedicated to transforming food waste into nutritious food for humans while ensuring environmental sustainability. We tackle two critical issues in Malaysia food waste and food security through an innovative regenerative farming model designed to enhance food production in Malaysia while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the diversion of food waste from landfills.

THE VISION

We envision a Malaysia that is self-sufficient in food production, where communities thrive through sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

THE MISSION

Our mission is to create innovative and sustainable solutions to improve food security and reduce food waste, contributing to a healthier planet and society

OUR STORY

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our founders, Jing and Nicole, embarked on a 3000km drive into Thailand as border restrictions were lifted. What began as a much-needed break turned into a journey of discovery. They were curious about the state of their neighboring country, which is heavily reliant on tourism, and were surprised to find that Thailand was not at a standstill. Food prices remained stable, thanks to the country’s extensive network of domestic food suppliers and impressive self-sufficiency in food security.

Inspired by Thailand’s model, Jing and Nicole saw an opportunity to merge their passion for environmental protection with a business idea. They embarked on a research journey to enhance food security and reduce waste in Malaysia. This led to the creation of their first proof-of-concept unit: an aquaponics system integrating Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL).

After a successful pilot launch, Jing and Nicole’s innovative approach earned them a spot in Petronas SEEd Lab’s Social Enterprise Accelerator Program. With an expanded team, they are now on a mission to save the environment while improving food security in Malaysia.

QUINTERRA’S CIRCULAR ECONOMOY

Our Biotechnology: An Innovative Regenerative Farming Model for a Circular Economy

Step 1: Food waste collected from Restaurants

Step 2: Utilising Bioconversion Agents

Step 3: Producing fish feed from bio conversion agents

Step 4:  Integrating Aquaculture and vegetable farming (Aquaponics)

Step 5: Selling fish and vegetables to restaurants

Step 6: Returning restaurante waste to us

Our process begins by redirecting food waste from landfills to our facility, where it is converted into animal feed and fertilizer using Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). The BSFL is then processed into fish meal, which feeds the fish in our aquaponics system.

Through our aquaponics system, fish waste is managed by the vegetables that act as natural water filters. This creates a sustainable, closed-loop system that recycles water within fish farming. Our mission is to create innovative and sustainable solutions that improve environmental impact and food security, contributing to a healthier planet and society.

Nutrient Recycling Champion

Black soldier fly larvae excel at converting organic waste into valuable resources, effectively reducing food scraps, manure, and agricultural waste, and producing high-quality compost in the process.

Sustainable Protein Source

Rich in protein and essential nutrients, black soldier fly larvae offer a sustainable alternative to traditional livestock feed, widely used in aquaculture, poultry, and pet food industries, contributing to eco-friendly animal farming.

Environmental Benefits

Using black soldier fly larvae for waste management significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and mitigates the environmental impact of waste disposal. Their frass serves as a high-quality organic fertilizer, enhancing soil and plant health.

Low Maintenance and Resilient

Black soldier flies are hardy insects that require minimal care and can thrive in a variety of environments. They are resistant to diseases and pests, making them an easy-to-manage option for insect farming operations.

OUR IMPACT

Since Jan 2024 QuinTerra has successfully redirected :

of Food waste from landfill which equates to 1064 KG of carbon.

of Methane mitigated and converting it into 410 KG of fresh produce.
